Updated Life Choices

Hi everyone!  I hope you're all having a lovely May so far.  It's usually such a lovely month here in western NY, though very wet!  We live very near the top of a hill, so you would think the water would run down to a lower level.  But no, in the spring, our back yard is so wet that I need to wear knee high muck boots, and even then I usually splash mud up on my pants.  It gets so bad in the back near my apple trees that I sink in an inch or two, slip and slide all over the place, and sometimes very nearly lose a boot!  Hubby and I joke that we have to attach pontoons to our lawn mower.

I love spring though, none the less.  It's a chance to get outside again after a very long, cold winter, a chance to get back in touch with nature, to put my hands in the soil, hear the birds, see the little green things growing.  It's lovely and magical.

I have found myself wanting to spend more time on my home, my garden, and my family this spring, and less time on my designs.  It's not that I have lost interest in designing, but that I want to make the other parts of my life a higher priority right now.

I was beginning to wonder when I should start getting back into designing when I got an email from Annie's.  Annie's is the one big company that showed interest in my designs, and I actually sold very well on their website.  They're kind of the reason why I pushed myself so hard there for a while, because they were actively seeking new designs.  Isn't that how it is with big companies, always searching for the big new thing?  Well, Annie's emailed to let me know that they discontinued about 3/4 of the patterns they were selling for me.

At first I was kind of upset about it.  I mean, I worked really hard on those patterns and I also worked really hard to get those patterns on Annie's website...  but then I decided that maybe it was an opportunity to reevaluate my life and where I'm going.  The truth is, I wasn't very happy with where my design business was going and it was a good time to change things.

Working with Annie's really made me proud, but it was also really hard.  When I was working the hardest on my designs, it was a part time job, 4 hours a day and roughly 20 hours a week, but I'm only getting paid about 1/3 the price of even a minimum wage part time job. And because they wanted new patterns frequently, I found myself sacrificing what I wanted to design for what was easy to design.

So in light of all of this, plus the fact that I want to spend more time focusing on my home and family and garden, I decided that I'm going to shift gears a bit.  I do still want to design, but I want it to be on my own terms this time.  That will mean fewer new designs, but hopefully more interesting ones that I can really get into.  More complicated, interesting patterns.  Maybe I'll branch out into quilting?  We'll see.  Right now I feel like I'm trying to find my way, and I'm just trusting God to lead me down the path I'm meant to be on.  So I hope you'll all bear with me!

I don't know what this means for my blog.  I do want to continue to post about my life, and I probably will post free patterns, but I don't think I can promise weekly patterns like I was doing before.  That's too much of a grind for me right now.  I have a very good library of free patterns though, so make sure to look through it!

I also want to let you all know that all of my patterns are still available in my Etsy shop.  I'm still waiting to see what's happening over at Craftsy (or Blueprint is their new name I think).  I may post my patterns there when they reopen their pattern section, but for now my patterns are only really available on Etsy.  If anyone has any suggestions of where else I can sell my designs, let me know!

I guess that's all for now.  I wish I could say more about what I plan on doing, but right now I just don't know!  Except to say that I definitely will be working in my garden every day that I can!

What's up Wednesday: Catching up with life

Happy November!  Can you believe it's November already?  I really can't.  And not only that, it's like a week into November even.  I need to buy a turkey this weekend!  Holy smokes!  Where on earth is the time going?  I guess that's life though, always moving faster than it looks.  That's why you need to enjoy every day while you have it, because once it's gone it's gone.

Well, now that my life has calmed down some and I'm beginning to settle into the slower pace of indoor life, I thought maybe I should post a life update so you all don't start worrying that I died.  I almost did!  I managed so survive though and now I can tell you the tale.

First, I'll start with garden news.  It was a truly abundant garden year.  I don't know if the surplus production was because of a new fertilizer I used, or the amazing weather, or more likely a mixture of both, but I got so much produce from my garden this summer that I was freezing and canning something almost every single day.  Let me put it this way: I canned well over 300 jars of produce and filled my 7 cf chest freezer (plus my refrigerator freezer) all the way to the very top.  I also have a five gallon bucket of rutabagas hanging out in my attic where it's nice and cold.

The amazing part about my huge haul of garden veggies is that I didn't even get to pick all of them.  Gallons of tomatoes fell and rotted on the ground, probably close to a gallon of raspberries rotted, and who knows how many ground cherries.  I missed all of that because September was the month from hell for me this year.  Usually September is my very favorite month, but this year will go down as one of the worst.

One of my two kitty babies, Spices, got sick in late August/early September.  She had trouble eating and was clearly in a lot of pain.  We had to cancel all of our plans to be out because she needed to eat very soft food in small frequent doses (because my other kitty Sunshine is a pig and would have eaten it if we just left her a plate of food out).  We got her into the vet and the doctor gave her an antibiotic and told us to bring her back in a week to see if she had improved.  Well, she didn't improve.  He had told us that if she improved, it was likely a rotten tooth and that they would fix her up.  But if she didn't improve, she probably had cancer.  It was so hard to watch her that week eat less and less, and she was clearly in a lot of pain.  So on the following Monday, we called the vet and got her an early appointment because we knew.  She wasn't going to make it.  We did the kindest thing we could do for her and had her put to sleep.  She was around 14 years old and she was well loved.

Well, I was a total wreck after we lost her.  She was my hubby's cat through and through.  She loved him to death, would follow him around everywhere, sleep with him every night.  But when he wasn't around, she'd hang out with me and we were buddies.  I miss her.

Have you ever heard that when you're stressed or really sad, your immune system shuts down?  Well I found out how true that is.  A week after losing my kitty, I got salmonella poisoning.  Now I used to think that Salmonella wasn't that bad, just a stomach bug that made you sick for a couple of days.  It turns out that it can be pretty bad.  I was just kind of sick for the first couple of days, but then on the third day, I felt like I was going to die.  I hurt so badly that I didn't want to do anything but lay in bed.  I didn't even get up to brush my teeth at the end of the day.  I couldn't eat anything.  Actually, at that point, I was thinking that death might actually be better than what I was going through.

It took me nearly an entire month to get back to some kind of normal, and I'm still having some tummy issues today.  The culprit turned out to  be... raw milk.  I'm a big proponent of everyone's right to drink raw milk if they want to.  Many states in America make it very hard to get raw milk.  It's actually legal in NY state where I live, but nearly impossible to find.  However, we're right on the border of PA which is much more relaxed about it, so we would go down and get a half gallon once a week.  However, like with all wild and unprocessed foods, there's a risk, and unfortunately I was in a very weak state at the exact time when there was an outbreak of salmonella at the farm.  Will I drink raw milk again?  Maybe.  Have you ever gotten drunk and gotten hung over the next day?  I haven't, but my dear (stupid) husband has, and he tells me that when you're that sick, you never want to touch anything you associate with the sickness again.  He wouldn't drink apple juice for years afterwards, which is what he drank between throwing up, he hasn't touched the brand of beer that he was drinking the night before ever again, and he said he didn't even want to wear the t-shirt he wore that day.  That's kind of how I feel about raw milk right now.  Also raw eggs and raw chicken and spinach and... well I guess salmonella is in everything these days.  Did you hear it was in cake mixes recently?  Yikes.

I did get well enough to enjoy a lovely stay-cation I took with Chad in early October.  We were hoing to be able to enjoy the fall leaves, but it's been an odd year.  The leaves didn't really change color until late last week and they're already off of the trees today.  Anyway, we enjoyed our stay-cation.  We got to see lots of amazing local attractions and got to do a lot of hiking and drives through the country.

After our stay-cation, we spent a frantic two weeks getting all of the fall to-do list items done, like bringing in the outdoor furniture, winterizing the lawn mower and getting the snowblower ready, and putting the garden to bed.  I've been just mellowing out since then, trying to get myself back into some kind of normal.  I finally feel like I have the time and energy to finally get back to work on my designs!  I'm very excited about that.  It's easy to forget how much joy creative pursuits can bring you because they're the very easiest to cut out when life gets too busy.  Well, it's definitely craft season now!  It's actually predicted to snow several inches next week!  I guess I won't be outside digging in the garden anytime soon.

Well, I guess I technically was digging in it yesterday, planting next year's garlic.

I guess we're all caught up now.  I'm trying to spend a little more time on my designs everyday, and I actually got a new design put up onto my Etsy shop!  I'll post about it tomorrow, I'm sure you'll love it as much as I do.  With the extra free time, I'll probably start posting free Friday patterns again.  As usual, I'm open no requests for ideas!

Have a wonderful Wednesday, everyone!

So am I a Housewife or a Designer?

If you've read my about page, you already know that I'm a homemaker and have been for a while.  I'm going to be honest here and say that I actually wanted to be a homemaker since I was about 16.  My mom was a single working mom and I'm her youngest child, and I would often play homemaker while she was off at work.  I would clean and cook and generally take care of the house.  I wasn't very good at it back then, of course.  I was 16 and I didn't actually have a teacher.  I was pretty much teaching myself how to do everything.  It's taken me a long time, but I'm actually starting to feel like I'm good at it.

Well, I also wanted to be an artist from a young age.  I think I started telling people I was going to grow up and be an artist when I was maybe 10, and around the age of 14 I started pursuing art pretty seriously.  I'm a fairly decent artist.  I'm not a great master or anything, but I like to believe that I'm pretty good.

One of my favorite paintings I've done.

I thought it would be a pretty cool idea to combine my two passions.  If I stayed home to be a homemaker, I figured, I would have the time and freedom to pursue my art as well!  Right?  That makes a lot of sense.  But somewhere along the way, I ended up putting the art part of me aside and focused almost exclusively on the homemaker part.  I wanted to be the best homemaker ever.  I loved it when my mom said I was just like my grandma (who was an amazing homemaker), and reading all the cool stuff about home care filled me with happiness.

Over the years, I've stopped thinking of myself as an artist and instead think of myself as a homemaker.  When someone asks me what I do, I usually tell them I'm a housewife.  That, I have found, is an excellent way to stop a conversation dead in its tracks.  I live in NY state, and even though I'm in a more conservative agricultural part of the state, it's still a pretty liberal area in general.  Women just don't stay home to play homemaker, so no one really knows what to say to you when you tell them you're a housewife.  It's like you told them that you're from Mars or something.  I think it's especially confusing for people because I don't have children and they can't figure out why I would even want to stay home.

Well it occurred to me recently that I'm not exclusively a homemaker anymore.  Yes, it's true, I take care of my home and my family, but I'm also a designer.  I have my own business!  I pay self-employment taxes like a grown up and everything!  Finally, I have an answer to the "what do you do?" question that won't end the conversation!

Except, in the moment, it totally slips my mind that I'm anything but a homemaker.  Isn't that funny?  Apparently, in my mind, I'm just a homemaker.  I can't figure out if that says something about me or not.  Like, am I dismissing my design work?  Or maybe my homemaking is more important to me?  Hmm.

My husband says I don't give myself enough credit with my design work, and he's probably right.  I have a habit of being too hard on myself by expecting perfection and instant success.  He also thinks I should definitely call myself a designer.  I want to agree with him, but I just have such a hard time remembering to do it!

So, I need to start practicing.  I'm going to start thinking about myself as a designer, and try to remember that the work I do is important in my life.  It gives my days meaning, it brings joy to my life, so I should try to take it more seriously.

Prioritizing My Life

Happy Monday morning, everyone!  I hope you all had a good weekend.  Mine was hectic, I suppose, but I made it through.  Monday is always a good day for me, because it's a fresh start, a brand new chance to do my best.  I'm also a morning person!  So yes, I'm sure I'm very irritating to all you groggy I-hate-Monday types, but that's just the way I am.

I did however wake up this morning with a feeling of dread.  I knew that my to-do list was going to be a mile long and I really didn't know if I would have the time or energy to get it all done.  Then on top of that, my tummy is kind of achy this morning (probably from the birthday cake I ate yesterday, ugh), so knew I had to prioritize.

As much as I love doing my design work, the truth of the matter is, my home and my family comes first in my life.  I think that should be true of everyone.  If we all put our homes and families first, imagine how much nicer this world would be.  Honestly, I wouldn't be very productive with my creative work anyway if I had that soul crushing feeling of knowing how much needed to be done weighing on me.  It really helps my creativity if I have a clean slate, a clear mind to work with.

So for today at least, I'm working on cleaning, getting must-do home tasks done, and otherwise focusing on my home.  If I get it all done early, then I'm going to work on my design work.  I finished stitching my happy fall sign on Friday, and now I need to get the graph done and take pictures, etc.  I need to get it done soon because I seriously need to start working on Christmas designs.  Now that Annie's is coming to me and asking for patterns, I want to have some ready!  That's way more professional (and less stressful) than saying, ugh yeah, give me two weeks and I'll make you something!

Have a great Monday everyone!  I hope it's a productive day for you!

Tuesday Progress

Happy Tuesday, everyone!  Are you having a good week so far?  I certainly am.  It feels really nice to get back into the swing of designing and crafting again, although I have to say it's hard for me to keep focused when I'm out of my routine.  The way I would like my day to go is to eat breakfast with my husband, do my daily meditating and writing until 9am, then work on my designing and blogging until noon, eat lunch, and then do my house cleaning and such until about 4pm when I start making dinner.

Well of course that doesn't always happen.  We don't have children, but we do help with my elderly parents and that can sometimes feel like being a parent.  My mom called and asked me to help her go shopping this morning.  She has a bad hip and back, and has a hard time walking around the three miles of Walmart to get everything on her list.  Afterwards, she wanted to go get coffee so we could catch up.  I'm glad I went.  I'm so grateful that I'm able to help her and to spend time with her still and that we're so close.  Yes, my morning got messed up because I was out until 10am, but I can't let that stop me from doing the work that needs to be done.

So once I got home, I got back to work on my fall design!  It's coming along.  I'm just starting to get the pieces finished off and soon I'll be able to glue it all together.

I like it.  I think it's a cool rustic piece that will fit in my home pretty well.  I'm going for a kind of country rustic design in our home.  We have several barn stars in the living room, and we have one on our front porch too!  I think they're really cool.

Tomorrow I plan on posting more about how my life's been going since I took a break, so I'll see you then!  I need to go get my lunch made and then I'm off to get the house chores done.  Have a great day!

Refreshed and Ready to Go!

Hi everyone, happy Monday!  Did you all have a good weekend?  Mine was really good, except for the fact that it was 30 degrees and snowing!  Now I live in a cold area, but that's ridiculous even for us.  Usually this time of year it's in the 50s and I'm getting my garden ready for planting.  I saw yesterday that Home Depot was having their mulch and other garden things on sale, and my first thought was that their sale was WAY too early!  But then I realized, this is when they usually have their sale!  It's just that it's so unusually cold and yucky this year :(  But the good news is that after today the weather is going to start warming up to a more normal temp!  I'm very excited.

Well, it's been several weeks that I've been on hiatus, and I realized yesterday that I'm so ready to get back to designing and blogging again.  It was very nice to have some time off to focus on myself and my home and family, I won't deny that.  I got my house back in order, I spent some time doing fun things with my husband, I did a bunch of sewing, and I'm well on my way on my diet too.  But I realized this weekend that I was starting to get bored, and although I like a peaceful slow paced life, I don't think anyone likes a boring life.  It's time to start being creative again!

I might change things up here at the blog.  I don't think I'm going to post a free pattern every week like I used to, because that's very demanding.  First of all, coming up with a new pattern every week is hard enough, but that's on top of making my paid patterns too.  I think instead, I'm going to make free patterns when an idea strikes my fancy, rather than trying to force it.  I'm always open to requests, by the way, so if you have any good ideas, just send them my way and I'll see what I can do!

I'm going to start writing more about my life and my creative pursuits, because, well, who doesn't like talking about themselves?  I'm going to try to be open and honest about the things I do well but also the things I totally mess up.  It's so frustrating to me when I see those blogs that make it look like the author's life is perfect and all their projects are master pieces, because my life isn't like that at all.  I want to remind people that everyone messes up, and that's ok.  And I hope by doing so I can connect with other real folks who are also flawed.

I think that's it for today.  After I finish posting this, I'm going to get back to work on a project I put down a few weeks ago, a very cool rustic fall pumpkin sign.  I think I put it down for so long because there's one thing I really hate doing with my designs, and that's designing the words on a sign.  I'm not bad at fonts, but I don't like doing them because they're really challenging :(  But I just need to push through and get it done, so I can move on to something else!

I hope you all have a wonderful Monday, everyone!  I'm so glad to be back!
